Music Teacher - (Strings)-Grades 3-8
Marc Haas is the orchestra director and strings teacher at Detroit Waldorf School. Earning a Bachelor of Music in Performance/Double Bass at the University of Michigan in 1986, Marc went on to do his work in teacher certification at Oakland University. While at OU, Marc won the concerto competition in 1988, and performed the Bottesini Double Bass Concerto No. 2 with the Oakland Symphony. Marc also earned a Master's of Education from Wayne State University.
Coming to Waldorf after retiring from Detroit Public Schools, Marc was Orchestra Director at Cass Technical High School for 17 years. His groups won 1st and 2nd place in the statewide chamber music competitions sponsored by the Michigan chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). His students were also nominated on numerous occasions as concerto soloists for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival.
Marc has played the double bass with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Michigan Opera Theater, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Toledo Symphony, and is currently Principal Bass of the Oakland Symphony. He has played for many of the great conductors of this and past generations, including Antal Dorati, Leonard Slatkin, Michael Tilson-Thomas, Max Rudolf, José Serebrier, James DePriest, and Gunter Schuller.
Marc was also the music director of the ground-breaking world beat ensemble, the Earth Island Orchestra, which brought together over 18 American and immigrant musicians in the Detroit/Windsor area, honoring and blending together the musical traditions from the diverse cultures of the world.
